What makes a good book good?
Every good book is good for different reasons, of course, but I believe that the best books have these three qualities:
1The characters are unique, flawed, and memorable. Characters that you fall in love with, that you root for, that you identify with, that feel like real people you’d want to meet. If a book has characters whose lives I still wonder about even after I finish their story, I consider it a really good book.
2You don’t want the story to end. Books that cause me to have an internal war with myself: I want to keep reading and read faster because I just have to find out what happens, but at the same time I want to stop and slow down because reading faster means the book will end sooner. This constant back and forth is a sign of a great book.
3The book inspires me. When I finish a book, if I’m feeling inspired to create something of my own, to write characters like the ones I just met, to create worlds like the one I just lived in, to tell stories like the one I just got lost in, that is a sign of the best kind of book.
